Our City of Santa Fe water conservation message includes teaching school children where our water comes from, how it is treated to ensure that it is safe to drink, and how much energy is required to treat and distribute it through the pipes that bring it to the taps in their homes. We talk about how trash, pet waste, and other pollutants that we don’t pick up can run down streets and end up in the arroyos during storms, ultimately ending up in the river that supplies part of our drinking water. We also discuss the importance of wastewater, a stinky topic to most kids but an important process to consider when thinking of the entire water picture. Every drop of water that goes down the drain is directed to the wastewater-treatment plant, where it undergoes advanced, expensive treatment. If water is wasted in the home, this treatment process happened unnecessarily.
