The DOT has recently issued a $544.6 million TIFIA loan to the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) for 775 new railcars — all part of a $2.2 billion system0wide upgrade aimed at enhancing safety, accessibility and energy efficiency. According to TAM America, this funding will help BART allocate more resources towards other critical projects and is expected to save up to $394 million through an accelerated railcar production timeline.

Key improvements include LED screens for customer information, enhanced security features and a three-door design to improve passenger flow. Manufactured in the U.S. at the Alstom plant in New York, the new railcars incorporate locally sourced materials and parts, creating hundreds of jobs.
