U.S. Legislation Targets Chinese Cyber Threats to Port Infrastructure
Senators Bob Casey and Mark Kelly introduced the Secure Smartports Act to safeguard American port infrastructure from cybersecurity threats posed by China. The act mandates the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) to create and execute a cybersecurity plan for U.S. ports.
According to the Franklin County Free Press, the plan aims to mitigate risks associated with Chinese technology, which could be used for espionage or to control critical infrastructure and supply chains. The legislation emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the Nation’s Marine Transportation System (MTS), which relies heavily on digital systems for operations such as ship navigation and cargo movement.
