Structurally deficient bridges need to be fixed

STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT are two words you don’t want to hear together. The term means that something is at risk of coming apart or collapsing. When it refers to bridges in the Fredericksburg area and across Virginia that are used by our loved ones and neighbors every day, it is cause for alarm. According to a report issued last month by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, which was based on information from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2017 bridge database, 825 bridges in Virginia are rated as “structurally deficient.” They amount to 5.9 percent of the nearly 14,000 bridges across the state.
