South Carolina receives over $4M from Department of Energy

The Department of Energy announced $18.9 million in grants to 12 disadvantaged communities, aiming to revitalize areas impacted by nuclear defense activities through economic development and community projects. South Carolina will receive $4.88 million for initiatives including workforce training, STEM education, and supporting rural entrepreneurs.

The Department of Energy announced $18.9 million will go to 12 disadvantaged communities across the country through financial assistance grants.The grants are part of the Community Capacity Building Grant Program Funding Opportunity Announcement.

The awards aim to reinvest in disadvantaged communities affected by years of nuclear defense and research activities, and currently hosting environmental cleanup sites.

They will also work to strengthen community ties by supporting projects that advance economic development, revitalization, and inclusive engagement.

The Southern Carolina Regional Development Alliance in Barnwell will receive a grant of $1,974,371 to renovate a building into a regional workforce training center for craft workers needed at DOE facilities.

The University of South Carolina will get $1,945,823 to enhance STEM opportunities for underserved K-12 schools across the state.

The Southern Palmetto Foundation will be awarded $962,142, including a $359,422 cost share, to support a three-year education project for rural small business entrepreneurs in areas with declining populations who want to learn new business technologies.

In total, these South Carolina grants amount to $4,882,336.
