Ohio Intersection Safety Has Improved

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) highlighted the significant safety improvements resulting from roundabout installations across northwest Ohio. A prime example is the roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 224 and State Route 587 in Seneca County, which has successfully eliminated both overall and injury crashes since its construction. ODOT officials noted that while public acceptance of roundabouts can be slow, especially in areas accustomed to traditional stop signs and signals, the effectiveness of roundabouts in reducing crash severity is undeniable.

In 2019, Governor Mike DeWine initiated a statewide initiative targeting safety enhancements at 150 intersections, with an investment of $425 million aimed at improving safety in rural, suburban, and urban areas. ODOT’s data shows that at all selected locations where roundabouts were implemented, there was a notable decrease in injury and fatal crashes. As Chris Hughes, ODOT District 1 deputy director, remarked, the ultimate goal remains to enhance public safety on Ohio’s roads, a mission supported by the proven benefits of roundabouts.
