Lucas County Commissioners take environmental stand

The Lucas County Commissioners officially took a stand today against proposed cuts by President Trump to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that would gut the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding. The resolution unamiously approved by the commissioners asks that funding for GLRI to continue at $300 million annually, not the $10 million in a tentative plan from the White House Office of Management and Budget. The GLRI funds state and local projects that combat invasive species, restore wildlife habitats, and clean up watersheds across the eight-state Great Lakes region. Its programs include efforts to curtail the algal blooms that shut down Toledo’s Lake Erie water supply in 2014.
