EPA could clean up American Creosote Works by 2021

Longstanding soil and water contamination at a defunct industrial site near Pensacola Bay could be cleaned up by 2021, provided the federal government approves funding for the project. On Wednesday night, representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency outlined the agency’s plan to clean up the former site of American Creosote Works, a wood-treating facility that operated just north of the Pensacola Yacht Club for about 80 years. Chemicals used at the facility have seeped into the area’s soil, ground water and surface water, and, in 1983, the 18-acre property was designated a Superfund site and targeted for cleanup by the EPA.
