EPA Awards $1M in Research Funding for Drinking Water Treatment
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded a $1 million research grant to Cornwell Research Group to assess and improve manganese treatment technologies for small drinking water systems. This funding aims to enhance the ability of states, Tribes, and small utilities to effectively manage and implement these technologies, addressing the specific challenges faced by smaller communities. The grant will support research into affordable and efficient treatment options, crucial for communities serving fewer than 10,000 residents who often struggle with limited resources.
Manganese, while an essential dietary element, can pose health risks at elevated concentrations, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. The research will focus on evaluating the costs and performance of various treatment methods, with findings shared through site visits, workshops, webinars, and a dedicated website. This initiative is designed to help small, rural, and Tribal water systems overcome the financial and operational barriers to maintaining safe drinking water and protecting public health.
