Enhancing the Road Transportation System Through Collaboration

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is enhancing the U.S. road transportation system through global collaboration, leveraging international best practices and innovations to ensure that America’s infrastructure remains among the safest and most advanced worldwide. The FHWA’s Office of International Programs (HPIP) employs four key mechanisms: the Global Benchmarking Program, Multinational Relations Programs, Binational Relations Programs, and the International Visitors Program. These initiatives facilitate knowledge exchange and the implementation of proven foreign innovations that can significantly improve U.S. highway transportation.

Notably, the Global Benchmarking Program enables FHWA to connect U.S. experts with advancements abroad, while the Multinational Relations Program fosters participation in global organizations like PIARC, promoting the sharing of innovative road practices among over 120 countries. Additionally, the Binational Relations Program supports long-term collaborations, such as the U.S.–Japan partnership, which recently allowed FHWA experts to assess earthquake damage in Japan, providing insights for U.S. seismic resilience efforts. By engaging with countries worldwide on topics like road safety and sustainable infrastructure, FHWA’s HPIP is committed to advancing a world-class transportation system in the United States.
