DOT Supports Research Initiative for Novel Cement Development

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced a $5 million research initiative awarded to Rutgers University’s Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT). This collaboration aims to develop novel cement materials that prioritize decarbonization, sustainability, and resilience within the nation’s transportation infrastructure. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that this funding aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration’s goals to innovate construction materials that significantly reduce carbon emissions and contribute to climate change solutions.

The initiative will leverage a network of partner institutions, including prominent universities and key players in the steel and cement industries, such as the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Lafarge Holcim U.S. By focusing on advanced materials and technologies, this research seeks to support national objectives for decarbonizing the transportation sector by 2050 and mitigating the environmental impacts associated with traditional construction practices. For professionals in homebuilding and development, these advancements could inform more sustainable practices and enhance the long-term resilience of infrastructure projects.
