City facing critical, expensive sewer line, wastewater plant upgrades

ALTON — The city’s wastewater treatment plant has been chugging along since 1964, with its original pumping system still processing millions of gallons of sewage each day. Prior to the plant opening, the city’s sewage went straight into the Mississippi River. Residents and businesses utilize the sewers every day, with the wastewater treatment plant operating invisibly to almost everyone, unless he or she has reason to visit the isolated facility at 19 Chessen Lane, south of East Broadway on the east side of town.
