As Savannah, Georgia’s streets flood again, city council discusses path forward for drainage improvements

Savannah streets were inundated with water from heavy rainfall Thursday, causing street flooding that left cars floating through water up to headlights in what is the city’s fourth significant urban flooding event since late July. City Manager Jay Melder said around 5 p.m. that the city experienced 8 inches of rain Thursday. Nearly 50 city roads were closed due to flooding. As the rainfall filled Savannah streets, city council engaged in a discussion about how to foot the bill for vast stormwater improvements as climate change contributes to increased severe weather events. The city does not have a dedicated fund for stormwater projects, and council heard a presentation from city staff on what a potential stormwater utility fund could accomplish.
