A Look at Future Bridges in Southern Florida

Broward County has unveiled preliminary designs for two new bridges over the New River, set to accommodate both a commuter rail system and marine traffic in Fort Lauderdale. Created by consultant TYLin, the designs are inspired by natural elements such as wave forms, fishhooks, and sea glass. Key concepts include the “Mast” design, which features sleek curves resembling yachts, and “Sea Glass,” characterized by fluttering edges that mimic water’s surface. Another option, “Fish Hook,” draws inspiration from fishing hooks, offering a unique silhouette and light features for nighttime visibility. The estimated cost for constructing these bridges ranges from $470 million to $495 million, with operational costs projected at around $1 million annually.

While the bridge designs are seen as potentially iconic, the debate continues between Broward County and Fort Lauderdale officials regarding whether to proceed with a bridge or consider a tunnel instead. Fort Lauderdale’s Mayor Dean Trantalis has expressed concerns about the bridge’s longevity, height, and the significant disruptions it would cause during construction. Estimates for a new train tunnel vary widely, from $888 million to $3 billion. The County Commission is expected to seek public input before making a final decision, with Broward Mayor Nan Rich emphasizing the community’s involvement in selecting a design that could significantly enhance local recognition and infrastructure.
