A Huge Boost in Infrastructure Spending is Very Popular — Depending How You Pay For It
New government spending on infrastructure development resonates well with a majority of Americans, but it depends on where the money comes from.
According to new polling from the Data for Progress think tank provided to Vox, 70 percent of the public support a $1 trillion infrastructure package described as paid for by a wealth tax. Only 32 percent are in favor of paying for increased infrastructure spending with a higher gas tax.
While the idea of more spending is widely popular, the question of funding options makes it a deeply complicated issue. Other funding funding options were also polled, but ideas like a wealth tax, a surtax on incomes over $200K, and a corporate profits tax were among the most popular.
